Quality noise canceling headphones

by  sbellville,   Jun 29, 2007

Pros:  Great noise-cancellation headphones for the price, good sound quality

Cons:  Not very comfortable, after a two hour movie my ears hurt

The Bottom Line:  Recommended to anyone looking for a good cost-effective set of noise-canceling headphones. I’ve owned this headphone for 8 months and I enjoy the sound quality and love the noise-canceling feature.

I bought the Phillips HN110 because it was a cheap alternative to the Bose QuiteComfort noise-canceling headphones. I believe in the school of thought “you get what you pay for,” and though the HN110 is a lot cheaper than its more expensive brothers I am very pleased with the product.

I had a long flight from California to Iraq on a C-17 (Military Aircraft, similar to a Boeing) which I used my headphones. The C-17 does not offer a quite ride, the roar of the engines are much worse than on a commercial flight. My Phillips HN110 did a great job at canceling the roar of the engines and allowed me to enjoy my music and movies.

I’ve used my headphones on commercial flights with the same results, once I turn the power on the roar of the engine seems to fade away. I’ve noticed that the headphones will cancel the noise of a washing machine or anything else that makes a consistent noise.

I’d like to explain what the headphones will not do; it will not get rid of all noises. With the headphones on and no music, you’ll notice that the environment noise melts away. The Phillips HN110 does an amazing job with a consistent noise like an A/C unit, airplanes, engine noise, and washing machines and a so-so job with footsteps or people talking to you.

The Phillips HN110 is an active noise-canceling system. What the headphone is designed to do is create an inverse wavelength to counter the noise it detects; thus canceling the noise.

Some of my friends have bought some cheap, no-named brand noise-canceling headphones and they were disappointed. I bring this up because their headphones would make a noticeable noise as it was trying to cancel the ambient noise. It sounded like a loud hummmmm. The Phillips HN110 does not have this problem.

The headphone runs off of one “AAA” battery. That one battery seems to last forever.

My only problem with the headphone is it hurts my ears after a couple of hours. By the end of a movie I’ve got to take the headphone off and massage my ears.

I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a good cost-effective set of noise-canceling headphones. I’ve been using this headphone for 8 months now and I enjoy the sound quality and love the noise-canceling feature.
