Back in Black: Motorola matches H500 headset to my Black Razr

by  ltrain, top reviewer in Kids & Family, Sports & Outdoors ,   Oct 19, 2007

Pros:  Small, light, the right Bluetooth for first time users.

Cons:  Only two hours of talk time...a cross state drive will require a charge!

The Bottom Line:  This is an easy to use, convenient hands free that every Motorola phone user should try!

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Every day I see people driving along holding a cell phone against their head with their hands and chatting away. Not only is this unsafe and illegal in some places, it's just plain cheesy. You wouldn't use a phone with a rotary dial at home so why live in the past in your car? Unless you want to look like a dork you've gotta have a bluetooth headset connected to your phone.

It's black!
I have a Motorla Razr V3m that I put a black aftermarket 'skin' on because I used to love the look of those black Razrs when they came out. This H500 is black, unlike the grey or pink versions, so it matches my phone. That's a cool touch to keep looking like you put as much thought/time/money into your phone (that you'll carry for two years) as you did into your outfit (that you'll wear one time).

It's small
Weight isn't even an issue with this unit. Put the hook over your ear (it can be configured for left or right ear) and you'll forget it. It's no more a burden than a walkman headset would be.

In terms of size the unit is roughly comparable to a thumb. It's about 2 inches long which is about the distance from the tip of your thumb to the first nuckle. It's only around an inch and a half wide...the width of your thumb.

Charge!
Charging this unit is no problem. It has the same plug in that my Razr does and comes with the same charger. This means that any charger I have for my phone (in the house, in the car, and hooked to my computer's USB port) will also charge my handsfree unit.

I get about two hours of talk time on the unit and my standby time without a talk session seems to be a couple of days.

When it's on:
The H500 is unobtrusive on your head. I wear sunglasses or a cap regularly to defeat sun glare and the H500 doesn't interfere with that. It's pliable ear hook feels best against the skin with my sunglasses slightly above and that works well for me.

I have never had my H500 fall off. Granted, the most active thing I might do in it is run down my driveway and back but who's going to the Olympic Training Facility while on the phone? Probably not the vast majority of us!

Ringtones
Like most of us, I use MP3 ring tones on my phone. When I get an incoming call and the H500 is active it doesn't use those ring tones, but uses a clearly recognizable classical music style tone while my phone plays the MP3 or vibrates as applicable. This tone isn't alterable: the H500 always uses it. No vibration setting either.

Using it with the Razr V3M
Pairing the two units together is no problem. The H500 comes with instructions that are clear and easy to follow. I had to go through the procedure maybe three times at first to get my phone to "learn" the H500 but after that they link to one another flawlessly. I don't think the early difficulties were because of the headset...I had the same trouble getting my phone to "learn" my wife's phone.

When a call comes in you simply press the button on the side of the unit to answer. It's that simple.

Want to make a call? Press the button on the side and state "Call Contact Name" or "Dial Numbers" with Contact Name or Numbers being who you want to call. The H500 lets the Razr know what you want and you are on the way...you don't even have to take your phone out of your pocket or purse to call anyone in the world!

Can you hear me now?
I haven't had any problems with holding a conversation using the H500. Granted, it doesn't have a microphone that sits over your lips (the whole unit is on your ear) so if you are in a moving car with the window down your going to have trouble talking but with the windows up I have a ton of car conversations that go just fine.

Overall:
I love my H500 and wouldn't give it up. I've used other colors (my wife has pink and I used to have a grey) and they work equally well so you shouldn't have to worry about that sort of thing. Grab a H500...it's easy to use and works great!
